While India managed to score 329 on a tricky pitch at the MA Chidambaram stadium in Chennai in the first innings of the second Test, England’s bowlers showed tremendous discipline and accuracy as the visitors broke a long-standing record in the longest format of the game. India’s total is the highest score conceded by any team in a Test inning, without giving away an extra, just edging past the 328 runs conceded by India against Pakistan in Lahore in 1955.

England took 95.5 to bowl India out, giving away no extra runs. In 1955, India bowled 187.5 overs to dismiss the Pakistan batsmen.

England’s discipline was in stark contrast to India’s performance with the ball in the first innings of the series opener, when they conceded 45 extras, including a whopping 20 no-balls.

India won the toss in the second Test and opted to bat. Rohit Sharma scored a magnificent 161, while Ajinkya Rahane (67) and Rishabh Pant (58*) hit half-centuries to help India post 329 on a turning pitch in Chennai.

Moeen Ali took four wickets, while pacer Olly Stone claimed three dismissals for England. Jack Leach bagged two wickets, while captain Joe Root also notched a wicket.

India came back strong with the ball, reducing England to 39/4 at Lunch on Day 2, with Ravichandran Ashwin picking two wickets.

Promoted

Ishant Sharma picked up the wicket of opener Rory Burns in the first over of England’s innings, while Axar Patel dismissed Joe Root to claim his maiden Test wicket.

Soon after Lunch, Ashwin struck again to send Ben Stokes packing.
